Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy

Equine-facilitated Psychotherapy is a treatment that is based on the goals of each individual participant through consultation and consideration of both a licensed therapist and certified instructor to improve psychological health. This offered therapy is not individual specific; families and couples can also inquire about Equine-facilitated Psychotherapy. This form of therapy is used to treat things such as:

  • Behavioral Issues

  • Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)

  • Different Forms of Abuse and Issues Surrounding Abuse

  • Eating Disorders

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • And Many Other Psychological Issues

Our equine partners are the main tools used during each session. The activities surrounding the horses can be grooming, leading, haltering, corralling, etc. The incorporation of the horses within this form of therapy is why it has been so successful. Horses are very behaviorally similar to humans, highly intuitive, and instantly reactive to the emotions of those working with and around them. The reflection of emotions that the horse can provide gives an extra element of information and understanding of participants that could otherwise be difficult to read. The reactions of the horses also provides a way for the participants to reflect on and discuss their thoughts or emotions they may have had during the time of the horse’s initial reactions.

Having a horse present also acts as a buffer between the participant and the therapist and instructor by providing a non-judgmental living being for the participant to communicate with without fear of rejection or criticism that a participant may fear when interacting with another person. Each horse and/or donkey is carefully chosen to suit the requirements of the participants as well as the varying activities that are done during each session.
